Our Business Initiatives

In early 2018, Christie’s International Real Estate opened a real estate gallery in a prominent space in the New York City auction house devoted solely to the sale of luxury residential property worldwide. The launch of our New York City brokerage—the only one owned by and operated within a global art auction house—directly serves those clients whose passions range from the collection of jewelry and watches to handbags, wine and great works of art, to the ownership of the most extraordinary real estate in the world’s most important luxury markets. AChristie’s International Real Estate branded brokerage followed in Aspen in October with another in the Hamptons to come.

Christie’s International Real Estate’s Affiliate network of independent brokerages continues to extend its global reach, with 144 Affiliates in 48 countries boasting combined network sales of more than US$500 billion over the last five years. In 2018, we expanded into new territories with Premier Estate Properties expanding into Palm Beach, Special Properties Real Estate Services expanding within Bergen County, New Jersey, One Caribbean Estates expanding into Antigua and Barbuda, and Coastal Properties Group expanding into Tampa, Florida. Additionally, Faith Wilson Group joined the network in Vancouver; La Baule & Vous in the LaBaule region of France, and Jubon in Taiwan.

2018 saw record-breaking sales from the Collection of David and Peggy Rockefeller, David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist, and The Winston Pink Legacy diamond.

Christie’s International Real Estate and its Affiliates were on hand at Christie’s sales around the globe, including in New York, London, Paris, Geneva, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. Sales were in all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewelry, photographs, collectibles, wine, and more. Christie’s has a global presence in 46 countries, with 10 salerooms around the world and more recently has led the market with expanded initiatives in growth markets such as Russia, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates.

We were proud to sponsor, with our Affiliates, the record-breaking Collection of David and Peggy Rockefeller Christie’s auction in May. Bringing in 30,000 visitors to the exhibition, this sale realized US$832,573,469, becoming the most significant charitable auction ever staged and the highest sale ever for a private collection, with 22 world auction records set.

Other successes included:
• The Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art evening sale made the highest total ever for an evening sale in Asia, achieving HK$1,040,390,000

• The London March Post-War and Contemporary Art evening auction made the highest total for any auction in the category in Europe (£137,459,750, sold 92% by lot), and combined with the Impressionist and Modern sales, ensured the series was up 24% on the equivalent sales in 2017.

• The New York November Post-War and Contemporary evening sale broke a world record price for a living artist with the sale of David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), which realized US$90,300,000.

• The Geneva Luxury Sales Week and the 50th Anniversary of Christie’s in Switzerland, both of which took place in November, included the sale of The Winston Pink Legacy. The largest and finest fancy vivid pink diamond ever offered at auction by Christie’s, which sold for US$50,375,000, a world record price-per-carat for a pink diamond.

By synthesizing the data of over 80 luxury real estate brokerages around the globe, Luxury Defined offers crucial observations and statistics that are invaluable for understanding today's international prime residential property market. It garnered significant press not only when it was published in May but throughout the year, and has generated over 2,100 downloads, 900 of which are new clients. The report both drives traffic to your listings on our site and enhances the brand significantly. We have already begun planning for the 2019 Luxury Defined Report so be on the lookout for the questionnaire so you and your market are featured.

We have rolled out a number of new initiatives this year to promote the Christie’s International Real Estate brand and to enable you to promote your affiliation with us. From a new digital and print advertising brand campaign and extensive press outreach to elegant print collateral, a new company store, The Brand Boutique, and continued partnership with luxury brands, we continually strive to support your brand-building efforts locally and globally.

More than 80 events in 30 locations worldwide offered plenty of networking opportunities to connect you to qualified high-net-worth clients.

Events & Conferences

In 2018, Christie’s International Real Estate had a presence at Christie’s sales worldwide. From New York to Dubai and Geneva to Hong Kong, our presence continues to strengthen our integration with the auction house and provides our Affiliates direct access to Christie’s clients.

In August, Christie's International Real Estate, in partnership with Rolls-Royce and a number of our Affiliates also sponsored the 68th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which included jewelry, watches, and handbags from Christie’s Private Sales. In December, we sponsored, again with Affiliates, the 29th edition of Art Miami. Affiliates also hosted private events with Christie’s at their top properties throughout the year.

Christie’s International Real Estate hosted the 2018 Owners Conference in Buenos Aires, its first in South America, where we awarded our 2017 Affiliates of the Year: Ivester Jackson of North Carolina (overall winner); Special Properties Real Estate Services of Bergen County, New Jersey (small market winner); Coastal Properties Group International of Clearwater and St. Petersburg, Florida (medium market winner) and Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers, which operates statewide and claimed the large market title. In September, we hosted the 2018 Luxury Specialist Conference at Christie’s flagship auction house at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, with more than 250 agents from the network in attendance. The annual conference is designed to further Affiliate agents’ knowledge of important luxury asset classes of art, jewelry, watches, handbags, and, of course, real estate, to better serve their valued clients. We look forward to seeing all of the owners in Paris for the 2019 Owners conference.

C-Suite, our online marketing portal where you can create co-branded marketing materials both digitally and in print, has seen significant activity in 2018. A new offering this year is a customizable listing presentation, an excellent tool for you to tell the Christie’s and Christie’s International Real Estate story alongside you and your firm, and all the ways we reach high-quality leads through access to the auction house and the wealth of marketing services Christie’s International Real Estate offers. In addition to the listing presentation, we have 78 new templates, a total of 296 templates, and an impressive 1,257,869 total emails sent. The top five most used templates are the Just Listed, Property, and Open House eCards, the Listing Presentation, and quarterly eNewsletters.

This year we introduced the Global Property Feed, a feed of the best properties in the network that can be added to your company’s website. We have created an XML data feed of approximately 200 properties from our network. This includes properties from our Bespoke and Signature programs, and also features the top properties from each Affiliate by price.

Set up the feed

In the first quarter of 2019, we will roll out the ability for Affiliates to create referral websites. An Affiliate referral website, is a Christie's International Real Estate site co-branded with your company’s logo that allows your clients to search all properties in our network. Inquiries from the website would go directly to your referrals manager and can then be sent as a referral to the appropriate Affiliate.

Giving Back

We created our first ever Children’s Activity Book to raise money for All Hands and Hearts’ Resilient Roofing Project in Puerto Rico.

Christie’s strives to maintain its legacy of service by encouraging employees in volunteerism and charitable giving. From the Global Day of Volunteer Service in New York, London, and Hong Kong, and the Staff Art Show to Charity Auctions around the world, Christie’s employees volunteer their time to both lead and participate in many CSR-related activities. As the world continues to face natural disasters, Christie’s recognizes the need to assist those affected and support the volunteers on the ground providing care to those in need. This year, Christie’s made a generous donation to the American Red Cross in aid of their relief efforts for the tragic wildfires in California.

Beyond our participation in Christie’s initiatives, Christie’s International Real Estate created the first-ever Children’s Activity Book to fund permanent roofs for four families still recovering from 2017’s Hurricane Maria. Nine Affiliates supported the first edition that raised US$30,000 for All Hands and Hearts, a charity that addresses the immediate- and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. With 2,500 copies printed and available at Christie’s offices and salerooms throughout the world, the Children’s Activity Book is a thoughtful amenity to offer clients visiting with children, as well as at children’s events hosted by Christie’s internationally.

Brand Campaign

When Others See a House We See a Work of Art is the title of the newly launched brand print and digital advertising campaign. It delivers a strong brand message while showcasing a particular property and providing a specific call to action.

Our digital brand campaign has generated over 24 million impressions including premium online publications such as: The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg.

Strategic Partnerships

We continually look for opportunities to create experiences for your clients in your local markets and provide you access to high-net-worth clientele. In 2018, we sponsored Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach and Art Miami. We also partnered with luxury brands. Notably, we forged a strategic partnership with Ulysse Nardin, a Kering brand that is under common ownership with Christie's, to create watchmaking experiences for Affiliates and their clients.

Marketing Collateral

New marketing collateral includes a redesigned corporate brochure and inserts built for the flexibility to present with sophistication. In 2018, we have published 13 Luxury Living Booklets, elegantly designed and appropriately sized for easy client handling. Approximately 3,000 copies have been distributed to date at events and Christie’s sales.
